Alex Gambal New Releases | Summer 2018/2019

When Alex Gambal started his negociant business in Beaune in 1997, people said, “you’re going to make American-style wines!” Alex had different intentions, as he had learnt from some of the most celebrated names in Burgundy, “they were the aegis of what I wanted to make.” Alex became the first non-Frenchman to purchase vines in the Grand Cru of Montrachet back in 2011. Now his holdings, which are all farmed biodynamically, are spread across 12 hectares and more than 30 different appellations.

“I visited the Domaine in May 2018 during one of the busiest periods for all wine growers. We tasted through his range and all wines displayed bright, aromatic, fresh characters; concentrated but with a ‘drink now’ approachability. This commitment to vineyard management, along with an unforced approach to winery practices, make Gambal’s wines a reliable and rewarding domaine to drink.”

“Maison Alex Gambal is progressively transforming into a domaine because of 2015, 2/3 of its certified bio production was form domaine-sourced fruit. The owned vineyards now total about 12ha and stretch from Nuits to Chassagnes and the goal is to continue to add parcels such that ultimately, 80% of the production comes from owned vineyards…(2015) Ripeness levels, sugars and acidity were all extremely good, in fact sufficiently so that we used some whole cluster vinification for some of the reds. Yields though were not especially abundant as the flowering was troubled, particularly for the pinot, so it would be fair to describe them as limited. We like both the reds and the whites quite a lot and in particular the reds as they should age well yet be approachable young.” I was favourably impressed with the quality that I found here for the 2015 vintage…”
