Sentio Rouge 6pk 2016
A local Beechworth boy, Chris Catlow grew up amongst the vineyards of the region, and was destined to one day become the rising winemaking star of the region. Yearly trips to Burgundy to work vintage with Benjamin Leroux have taught Chris the importance of site, thus Sentio wines are always an expression of single vineyard wines. Founding his own label in 2013, Chris is amongst an exciting group of young winemakers emerging from North-East Victoria. Working out of an abandoned asylum in the middle of Beechworth, he is helping to reshaping the narrative of the region.
A Beechworth blend of sangiovese and shiraz, it’s a light- to mid-weight red with savouriness to the fore and firm, chewy tannin to close. Red cherries edging into black, peppercorns and general woody spice, a light kiss of woodsmoke, a semblance of cured meats. At first I thought there was a balsamic note here but it seemed to blow off, or at least I stopped being able to detect it. You wouldn’t call this a compelling wine but it’s immaculate, attractively savoury, and damned enjoyable to drink.
