After 20 years together, Renato Corino and his brother Giuliano decided to split their family's renowned Barolo estate in 2005, allowing each to forge their own path under different labels. Renato's 18 hectare share in La Morra is mostly Nebbiolo along with some Barbera and Dolcetto. After going solo, Renato built a brand new state-of-the-art winery to steer production in the same perfectionist fashion that he runs his vineyards. The two brothers are still close and having always worked together as a team, are both producing classic and distinctive La Morra Barolo from the famed Corino sites. Renato Corino Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata 2019
Rocche dell’Annunziata one of the great crus in Barolo, though most often with La Morra, you get a bit of oak scaffolding, which always confuses me, because La Morra offers perfume and delicacy, and yet, it seems to be an enclave of ‘modernists’, and while this producer is not one of the great culprits of flogging wine with oak, there’s still a little of that here.
Cherry, tobacco, rosy perfume, cedar and cinnamon spice. It’s savoury, supple fine-grained tannin, some vanilla and toast in the mix, blood orange and spice, a little warmth, but enveloped in the chicory and red fruited succulence, and the finish is toasty but cool, cherry, perfume, warm woodsy spice and camphor. Not my preferred style, but gee, the perfumed power of the vineyard is on full show here.
