Pegasus Bay is a family-owned and run business within the Waipara Valley, led by patriarch and Neuroscientist Ivan Donaldson. Free draining and low fertility soils produce low yields of high quality, flavourful grapes, which fully express the qualities of Pegasus Bay’s unique setting. The range of wines is led by diverse and ageworthy styles of Pinot Noir and Riesling, with highly expressive Semillon, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Malbec Cabernet Sauvignon blends complementing the portfolio.

    Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Semillon 2018
Wonderfully complex and engaging, the bouquet shows baked apple, apricot, fig, gunsmoke and oatmeal characters, followed by a powerful palate displaying outstanding weight and persistency. It's richly textured with firm acidity, making it structured and immensely long on the finish

    Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Semillon 2018
Powerfully expressive nose of bonfire smoke, struck match, grass, green herbs and citrus grabs your attention. Intensely flavoured palate, flavours totally filling the mouth adding toasted bread & spices. Superb complexity and balance, flowing to a long, creamy close with a hint of corruption. Vibrant and alive with real energy to this.

    Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Semillon 2018
Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Semillon 2018 Totally captivating bouquet - pungent, highly scented and evocative. Aromas and palate flavours of sweet hay and peach, waxy lemon peel and baked apple, nettles and gooseberries. Silty, chalky soil flavours, naturally higher acidity and a creamy texture combine to add a lush palate feel, youthful vibrancy and core of flavour. A totally delicious wine - I wish more people could discover this fantastic example.

    Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Semillon 2018
Rich, gutsy and quite complex blended white that's gently aromatic with melon, passionfruit, lime and struck flint and fireworks reductive character. A combination of firm acidity and fine tannins give the wine backbone and a drying finish.

    Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Semillon 2018
The distinctive North Canterbury wine has loads of personality. From vines over 30 years old, the 2018 vintage is mouthfilling and very youthful. Mouthfilling, it has intense peachy, limey flavours, a gentle seasoning of oak adding complexity, and a fully dry long finish.

    Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Semillon 2018
If a wine were a pop song, this would be “Uptown Funk” … That's because this cuvée is always a bit kooky. Here, it presents a combination of struck match (which the winery attributes to skin contact) with ripe passion fruit, apricot and rose petals on the nose. Both partners in the blend (70% Sauvignon / 30% Semillon) bring zest and refreshment, and the Sémillon adds a touch of midpalate weight to the light-bodied style. The 2018 follows its predecessors in being as quirky as Bruno Mars' wardrobe choices, but then who needs another mainstream Sauvignon?

    Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Semillon 2018
Bright, pale yellow with some depth and a green-gold hue, slightly lighter on the rim. The nose is full, tightly packed with nuances of mango, passionfruit, citrus zest and blossoms, along with struck match and flinty minerals. Medium-bodied, concentrated aromas of pinkgrapefruit and its peels lead the palate, along with tropical fruit, spices, barrel flint and a hint of toffee linger to a very long, sustained finish. The flavours are complex and concentrated, build up by a smooth flow from sur lie and richness from barrel fermentation; along with searing acidity provides a strong backbone, great energy and longevity. This is a rich and complex Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blend with a strong acid backbone and length...

    Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Semillon 2018
This is a new release and is characteristically succulent and zesty with funky earthy notes on the nose and a deliciously citrus flavour leading into an almost full bodied dry white. It’s a blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc, partially barrel fermented (all old oak) with 30% Semillon also fermented in old oak to add weight, softness and texture. Incredibly tasty dry white with a good decade or more up its sleeve. I’ve tasted 10 and 12 year old bottles of earlier vintages of this wine and they remain fresh and tight.

    Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Semillon 2018
Reductive nose - beyond flintiness, this has gone into rubber erasers and crushed paracetamol territory - but underneath it is a ripe, waxy lemon/rosemary and honeyed core of fruit. The palate is bracingly acidic but also powerful and weighty; showing barrelfermentation characters and plenty of richness. That said, the palate is certainly edgy, with some smoky oak contrasting the pithy phenolics and satisfyingly dry, puckering finish. This is always a consistent wine and it ages very well - easily a decade, often more. As far as Pegasus Bay Sauv Sems go, this 2018 is on the riper and more extreme end of the scale, superconcentrated and full-bodied. I suspect it willremain exotic and generous for most of its life

    Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Semillon 2018
Distinctive bouquet of fresh peach and lemon, a waxy sweet hay and floral layer then honeysuckle and a whisper of marmalade. Harmonious and complete on the palate with a silky soft cream texture, contrasting acidity and dynamic citrus and stone fruit flavours. Delicious, balanced, well made and ready.

    Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Semillon 2018
This is a new vintage of one of the country’s best dry whites from North canterbury’s Pegasus Bay Winery. It’s a vibrant and complex blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon modelled on the best of Bordeaux with a maverick New Zealand touch, which enhances its ripe flavours of apple, lime and gooseberry. The Sauvignon (70%) brings fruit flavours and excellent acidity while the Semillon (30%) adds fruit weight, richness and ageability, due to its pronounced acidity. Both varieties were aged on their natural deposits of yeast lees for approximately 10 months prior to blending, contributing creaminess and body. Once bottles, the wine was left to age for another year before release, allowing the varietal characters to integrate further. Drinks deliciously well now and can age for at least a decade in a cool, dark cellar. Rating:18.5/20
