Winery Details

Pegasus Bay is a family-owned and run business within the Waipara Valley, led by patriarch and Neuroscientist Ivan Donaldson. Free draining and low fertility soils produce low yields of high quality, flavourful grapes, which fully express the qualities of Pegasus Bay’s unique setting. The range of wines is led by diverse and ageworthy styles of Pinot Noir and Riesling, with highly expressive Semillon, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Malbec Cabernet Sauvignon blends complementing the portfolio.

Press Review

Pegasus Bay Prima Donna Pinot Noir 2013

Prima Donna Pinot Noir is an elite barrel selection and in 2013 it is one of the greatest wines I have ever seen from this country.

Pegasus Bay Prima Donna Pinot Noir 2013

A limited edition selection of wine made from grapes grown on the oldest vines in superior vintages. Deeply-scented wine that deserves to be decanted for best results. Intense pinot noir with plum, dark cherry and berry, liquorice, mixed spice and classy oak flavours. Showing some bottle development but capable of much more.

Pegasus Bay Prima Donna Pinot Noir 2013

The refinement and brilliance of the fruit on offer here really sets this wine apart from the regular Pegasus Bay pinot noir. Deliciously rich dark cherry aromas and flavors are presented amid silky, refined and long-form tannins. A great wine, in every respect.

Pegasus Bay Prima Donna Pinot Noir 2013

Fabulous bouquet with intense Pinosity showing dark cherry and plum fruits laced with fresh new oak and earthy qualities, silty clay soil notes; barrel spice and smoky wood moments. Dry with a dried herb layer, fine to chalky tannins, medium+ (ish) acidity - all resting in a cushion of primary and just emerging secondary fruit flavours. Great length, concentration and finish. What more can I say - it's just lovely!

My Top 20: NZ Pinot Noir

From 30-year-old vines, this initially brims with ripe plum and tart mulberry on a palate that just begins to unfold. This is very harmonious and has body, fruit, freshness and alcohol all in the sweet spot.

Pegasus Bay Prima Donna Pinot Noir 2013

Super charged aromas of doris plum, rose petal and almost a hint of freesia give an exotic opulence to the nose. Some red charry, plum and a little currant peeping through. Maybe not much by way of elegance, but so much power and flavour, this is an immensely appealing luxurious style of pinot noir.

Pegasus Bay Prima Donna Pinot Noir 2013

North Canterbury Pinot Noir is often eclipsed by its southern neighbour Central Otago, which is always a surprise when tasting Pegasus Bay’s Pinot Noir – particularly Prima Donna, which is one of the country’s most superlative Pinots. Winemakers Mat, Pete, Mark & Marie make this wine one of the best in New Zealand; savoury, earthy and full-bodied with big smooth tannins balanced by high acidity and concentrated rich dark fruit flavours with a long zesty finish. An outstanding wine to drink now (decant first) and to cellar 10 plus years.
