Winery Details

Pegasus Bay is a family-owned and run business within the Waipara Valley, led by patriarch and Neuroscientist Ivan Donaldson. Free draining and low fertility soils produce low yields of high quality, flavourful grapes, which fully express the qualities of Pegasus Bay’s unique setting. The range of wines is led by diverse and ageworthy styles of Pinot Noir and Riesling, with highly expressive Semillon, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Malbec Cabernet Sauvignon blends complementing the portfolio.

Press Review

Pegasus Bay Aria Late Picked Riesling 2018
Decadently luscious riesling with lime, honey, musk, apricot, stone fruits and delicately spicy flavours supported by crisp, mouth-watering acidity. Great with moderately sweet desserts or as an aperitif.

Pegasus Bay Aria Late Picked Riesling 2018
Deep straw colour. Boasting a voluminous, heady, heavily botrytised, Beerenauslese-style bouquet with a diverse aroma profile of tangelo, mandarin, Cointreau, beeswax and clove notes. A luscious, opulent, viscous, full-bodied botrytis style with enough acid to balance the richness. Well done.

Pegasus Bay Aria Late Picked Riesling 2018
Musk and comb honey, spices, red apple, white flowers. Rich and weighty, almost oily in its density, the musk and honey driving the palate,
adding spiced apple, with the acidity sweeping in to give this lift. A hint of almond gives a bittersweet note as a foil to the sweetness. Intense, powerful and a dessert in itself, or perhaps pair this with fresh fruit?

Pegasus Bay Aria Late Picked Riesling 2018

This is one of New Zealand’s great white wines each year. The word ‘aria’ means ‘air’ in Italian and is used to describe a song that is sung by a leading singer in an opera. The wine is made from late picked grapes that have shrivelled and dehydrated to such an extent that there is very little juice in each one, but plenty of sweetness in what remains. The wine is fermented to a sweet style of Riesling which is balanced by the natural acidity. It’s a stunning balance between luscious, textual richness and the refreshing delicious succulence provided by the acidity.
