Winery Details

Winemaker Ben (Mr.) Riggs follows the philosophy “iconic wines from iconic regions”. Whether it’s McLaren Vale Shiraz, Coonawarra Cabernet, or Clare Valley Riesling, his wines are expressing the essence of the vineyard and variety in a style that is big, rich and complex, but also with finesse, texture and elegance. In Ben’s own words: “Think Ella Fitzgerald – bombastic and powerful with a huge vocal range, yet with purity of tone and a gentle sensibility when needed.”

Press Review

Mr. Riggs Outpost Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
On skins for 10 days, pressed to 30% new French, 5% American oak barrels. This is possessed of firm, omnipresent tannins that shape the fruit, and almost threaten to overrun it. The oak must play a central role, however it is challenging to unpick the source of the tannins – the American oak (often very obvious) is all but swallowed by the fruit, evident only in the cushioned finish. This is a big, lush, plush wine, but it has some balance too. Lots of flavour for the money.

    Mr Riggs Outpost Cabernet 2020
Riggs usually does well with this Coonawarra cabernet offering and again we’re in business here. It’s mid-weight, authentic and just plain enjoyable to drink. Blackcurant, redcurrant and bay leaf flavours with a smidgen of toasty oak. The downplay of oak is a smart move here, especially given that it still feels soft in the mouth. No hesitation here.
