Winemaker Ben (Mr.) Riggs follows the philosophy “iconic wines from iconic regions”. Whether it’s McLaren Vale Shiraz, Coonawarra Cabernet, or Clare Valley Riesling, his wines are expressing the essence of the vineyard and variety in a style that is big, rich and complex, but also with finesse, texture and elegance. In Ben’s own words: “Think Ella Fitzgerald – bombastic and powerful with a huge vocal range, yet with purity of tone and a gentle sensibility when needed.”

Mr. Riggs McLaren Vale Shiraz 2015

Very deep, bright red/purple colour. The bouquet is latent, deep and shy at this stage, quietly brooding and dense, with full body but not overdone, the alcohol and other components all in harmony. Licorice and kola notes. Serious structure. A very smart shiraz, which leaves the impression that it has more to show us, given time. (Piebald Gully & Gateway vineyards. 700 dozen made. Best Shiraz in Show, 2018 Decanter World Wine Awards)

Mr. Riggs McLaren Vale Shiraz 2015

Ripeness, pushed to its boundaries, introduces bitumen notes to this bold and generally well-balanced shiraz. Indeed there’s a lot that seems measured about this. The deft application of coffee-cream oak. The finesse of the tannin. The run of brighter rapsberried/redcurrant flavours. In short, there’s a whole lot to like here, so long as the bigger end of town is your fancy.

Mr. Riggs McLaren Vale Shiraz 2015

Deep, dense red. Dark and briary with tar, tobacco and blackberry aromas. Vibrant, blackberry-jube flavours with accents of dark chocolate heightened by bright, integrated acidity. A delicious, succulent, full-bodied shiraz. It will benefit from a little time in bottle to mellow, soften and integrate. (Diam)
