Press Review

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Merlot 2015

Deep red colour with a strong purple tint. The bouquet is savoury, complex and yet still youthful, with raspberry undertones and hints of foresty, earthy, undergrowth savouriness. This continues on the palate which is full-bodied, softly-textured and fleshy despite a plentiful load of tannin. The weight and gravitas of this wine are excellent, the texture is supple enough for it to be drinking well now, although it will also age well. An outstanding varietal merlot.

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Merlot 2015

Delicately aromatic merlot with lifted spice, floral and red berry flavours. A supple, elegant red that’s been made with a light touch. Can be enjoyed now but promises to develop well in bottle. (Screwcap)

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Merlot 2015

This is a ripe and generous merlot expression showcasing blackberry and cedar fruits supported by coffee-scented oak. Dry, mid-weight and quite juicy, it is surprising powerful, tannic and muscular on the palate for a merlot and finishes with great length.

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Merlot 2015

Dark crimson-red. Ripe blackcurrant, black olive, leaf and dark plum lead this wine to medium-bodied texture with slightly firm gravelly tannins. Good now but probably better with several years.

Last year WA’s Margaret River Region celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 1967 planting of its first vineyard, Vasse Felix, by Perth cardiologist Dr TomCullity. Medico Dr Bill Pannell and his wife Sandra in 1969 established the area’s second vineyard, Moss Wood, and in the 1970s they produced cabernet sauvignons that made the wine world sit up and take notice. The Pannells sold the business in 1984 to their winemaker Keith Mugford and his wife Clare, who have maintained MossWood’s cabernet sauvignon excellence and added other fine reds like this 13.5 per cent alcohol, deep purple, potpourri-scented, plush mulberry front palate-flavoured merlot. The middle palate has plum, spearmint, cloves and savoury oak and a chalky tannins finish.
