Press Review

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Strongly varietal aroma with blackcurrant, cedar and a subtle floral note. A core of sweet fruit with a subtle liquorice, spice and anise influence wraps around a backbone of fine, soft tannins. An elegant wine that is approachable now but promises to develop well with bottle age.

Has the nervous energy of its '18 sibling, but the herbal, forest floor characters show the door to the fruit. Bordeaux lovers may enjoy this wine.

Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
Elite Cabernet already showing complexity with blackcurrant, tar, tannins , leather all adding to a satisfying finish. The Ribbon Vale vineyard produces one of the three Moss Wood Cabernets. Ribbon Vale tends to produce a slightly sterner expression than Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon and is generally more suited to cellaring for a few years. Though the 2017 also offers pleasure in the here and now. Moss Wood have just marked 50 years since establishment without making a big fuss. The highly capable Keith and Clare Mugford let the wine do the talking. Strong words softly spoken…

“94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. This Ribbon Vale feels closer in DNA to the estate Cab than the fragrant Amy’s. But I feel that ’17 is a stronger vintage which explains a bit. This has more width, more texture, more oak but it’s not as defined. Leafy but with a thicker middle. It’s quite a regal wine too, with a structure more at home in Bordeaux than typically seen in Australia. Quality, if not ready yet. In time this may be the pick of the wines. Best drinking: Wait 2 years and then drink for fifteen plus.”

The 2017 Ribbon Vale Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon includes 4% each Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The result is a silky, medium-bodied red with floral, violet-like aromas, raspberry and pomegranate notes and a soft, easy-drinking finish. Maturity: Early

Medium to deep, bright red/purple colour. The bouquet is shy and reserved, with toasty oak uppermost, the palate tangy with fresh acidity and medium to full body. The tannins are very soft and rounded, the palate flavour bright and zingy, lively and energised by its acidity. On the other hand, it’s elegant and refined and somewhat understated. A finer style that drinks well young and is well worth cellaring
