There are few tales as impressive as that of Lethbridge Wines. Ray Nadeson and Maree Collis were both successful medical researchers before succumbing to their desire to create a vineyard and winery in Geelong. They planted vines on their own rootstocks, built a straw-bale winery and house, and farmed the land according to biodynamic beliefs. Their wines are powerful, structured, pure and long-lived.

Press Review

Lethbridge Hugo George Sangiovese Merlot 2012

70/25/5% sangiovese, merlot and cabernet franc, the blend well known in Tuscany. There is a complex array of cherry and smoky charcuterie aromas and flavours; assured winemaking has precisely gauged the contribution of ripe tannins (even at this alcohol level) and French oak.

Lethbridge Hugo George Sangiovese Merlot 2012

Blend of cool climate sangiovese (75%), merlot (20%) and cabernet franc. ‘Out there’. Aged for 17 months in 70% French oak. Super Tuscan in concept (and pricing, perhaps) but given the region and the overall thrust of Lethbridge, it’s the most idiosyncratic of the Lethbridge releases.
Tannin aplenty. Meaty, herbal, streaky, captivating. Tastes of kirsch, tea leaves, shrubbery, pepper, spicy. Has enough fruit sweetness to carry the wild show of herbal/spicy/meaty savouriness. Boasts an extended finish. Shows clear signs of reduction. This will certainly not be to everyone’s taste, but as far as ‘walks on the wild side’ go there is a whole lot to admire here. Gorgeously fresh acid/tannin qualities.
