Few stories can be told about modern Australian wine without mentioning the amazing rise of Margaret River, and Leeuwin Estate as a pioneer. Founded by Denis and Tricia Horgan in 1979, it is the star estate of Margaret River’s southern area; with a particular pedigree in its famed Chardonnay, but also relatively recent acclaim for Cabernet and Shiraz.

Press Review

Leeuwin Estate Prelude Chardonnay 12pk 2019

Leeuwin. It’s one of those words that feels textural as you say it.

This release is a hit. It’s quite fine, almost cool, with citrussy, brine-like acidity running through and a distinct freshness to its feel. The word mouthwatering is apt. Nectarine, almond milk and a run of grilled peach, though that light/nutty/almond-like creaminess is a key feature. Needless to say, it drinks a treat. It’s not big or overly powerful but there’s more than enough here to satisfying and its length is good too.

Gentle aromatics of peaches, melon rind, citrus, cream and spice. There's stone fruit, guava and poached pear flavours. It's a rich and mouthfilling wine, generous and satisfying, with plenty of zippy acidity to keep things fresh, balanced and moreish.
