Few stories can be told about modern Australian wine without mentioning the amazing rise of Margaret River, and Leeuwin Estate as a pioneer. Founded by Denis and Tricia Horgan in 1979, it is the star estate of Margaret River’s southern area; with a particular pedigree in its famed Chardonnay, but also relatively recent acclaim for Cabernet and Shiraz.

Press Review

    Leeuwin Prelude Chardonnay 2016

Death, taxes and the quality of Leeuwin Estate chardonnay. This may 'only' be the Prelude version but its quality is as clear as a bright blue sky. Pure stone fruit, sweet oak, pear and a cleansing flush of citrus through the finish. It builds, it satisfies and it refreshes. Elegance and power in one.

    Leeuwin Prelude Chardonnay 2016

Mighty good wine for a second tier. And it, too, has been tightened and is quite different from the previous, slightly buttery styles. I like the textural creaminess on the palate, with a sorbet, light lemon curd character. Very attractive wine, which uses some wild ferment and solids character to influence the palate. It gets 40 per cent new oak, which strikes an excellent balance with the nashi pear and lime flavours.

    Leeuwin Prelude Chardonnay 2016

The label has a new design but I can’t yet find it anywhere, so the one pictured here is the ‘old’ one. Leeuwin’s “Prelude” chardonnay is routinely a pretty good offering.

It’s pure chardonnay. It’s sunny, it’s flavoursome, it’s splashed with an appropriate level of oak and it remains fresh/frisky through the finish. Indeed there’s almost a steeliness to this, and certainly a citrussy element, but it comes in the context of a wave of stonefruit and sweet, cedary flavour. Chardonnay 101, done well. Now or later.
