Winemaker of the Year |Tim Lovett | 2019 West Australian Wine Guide by Ray Jordan

Few stories can be told about modern Australian wine without mentioning the amazing rise of Margaret River, and Leeuwin Estate as a pioneer. Founded by Denis and Tricia Horgan in 1979, it is the star estate of Margaret River’s southern area; with a particular pedigree in its famed Chardonnay, but also relatively recent acclaim for Cabernet and Shiraz.

Press Review

    Leeuwin Prelude Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Medium to deep red colour with a tint of purple. The bouquet has some violet, red and blue berry and leafy nuances, while the palate is quite taut, firm and lean, tightly-packed and tense, with an over-arching impression of elegance. Very good value.

    Leeuwin Prelude Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Leeuwin’s Prelude Cabernet Sauvignon usually gets some help, if that’s the right word, from merlot.

It’s nicely put together. It sails along with blackcurrant, tobacco, menthol and dark chocolate flavour. It has tannin, enough, though it largely seems to have melted into the fruit. It’s easy drinking, in a way, but it still has cabernet’s inherent sturdiness. There’s no problem drinking this now, it’s good to go, but with such balance and weight of fruit you’d reckon that it will mature well into the medium term, if not longer. At four years of age it still seems youthful.
