Few stories can be told about modern Australian wine without mentioning the amazing rise of Margaret River, and Leeuwin Estate as a pioneer. Founded by Denis and Tricia Horgan in 1979, it is the star estate of Margaret River’s southern area; with a particular pedigree in its famed Chardonnay, but also relatively recent acclaim for Cabernet and Shiraz.

    Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay 2015

Wine of the Year | 2019 West Australian Wine Guide by Ray Jordan

I have over the years tasted every Leeuwin Art Series chardonnay and I rate the 2015 the greatest. It is the first white wine I have awarded 99 points.

    ...

More superlatives have been heaped on this great wine than any other Margaret River white. Another stunning wine showing an impressive refinement and subtle expression, while retaining the power that is its DNA. There is a purity, yet layered complexity. All inoculated yeasts and then barrel fermented in new French oak, with regular lees stirring. Has a crunchy lemony zip and grapefruit influence on the finish. Really long palate that effortlessly strikes out a tight and minerally finish. Deep, intense generosity. Cut lime and pear, with some nectarine characters and subtle fragrant jasmine. Has a tension and energy here. Cooler vintage similar to 2014. Oyster shell graphite.

Supple and creamy up front, with precision to the nutmeg, lemon curd, verbena and mandarin orange flavours, which are intense and harmonious. The elegant body and lingering accents of ginger and citrus zest elevate this white to something special.

    #99 James Suckling's Top 100 Australian Wines of 2018

This beast from the west is in great shape in 2015. It delivers that heady mix of rich and powerful peaches and citrus on the nose, which are framed in nicely integrated oak. The palate has a luscious, full texture, delivering a punchy array of powerful citrus and stone fruit. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Balance is born - my favourite wine mantra, and 2015 is exquisitely balanced from birth. '15 Art Series is a rare wine that shows immense presence and a flirtatious edge to its character...

Generous of flavour and texture, imparted by Leeuwin’s stamp of extended skin contact, an approach that demands impeccably ripe fruit. White peach and nectarine notes are strung pitch-perfect across scales of clotted-cream oak and juicy acidity. Long and pliant. Each piece of the jigsaw is in perfect synchronicity. A pedigreed wine boasting an impressive track record. I have had older vintages reminiscent of top Meursault.

    Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay 2015

MB and I tasted 20 Chardonnay each (blind) today, and 40 Pinot Noir, though I only got through 10 Pinot, while he did 30. He’s a powerful man, is our MB. Anyway, this stood out, so I’ll pop it on the front page first.

Pear, honey biscuits, some lime, aniseed, and firm cedar and spice oak, though it’s not overdone. Full-bodied, glossy texture, some white flower perfume in with pear and melon, ripe lime acidity and flavour, toasty wood in the mix, and a very long powerful finish, dusted with fine oak tannin and citrus zest. Kind of emphatic in style, but potent too, and while that’s true enough, I’d also say that this wine is becoming more refined and stylish, and the drinkability is on the rise too. Anyway, it’s a very good release.

    Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay 2015

Light to medium, bright yellow colour, very young for its age. The bouquet is shy but pleasantly nutty, showing some oak; the palate has bracing acidity and concentrated flavour, which is still latent and promising more in time. There's a slight dip in the mid-palate. The wine is still remarkably young and has a great career in front of it.
