Katnook Estate Merlot 6pk 2017
Katnook is one of the oldest and most acclaimed producers of fine Coonawarra wine. With a history dating back to 1896, it has estate vineyards in the heart of the famed soils on the Riddoch highway. Winemaker Wayne Stehbens made every single vintage of Katnook up until his passing in 2017; a remarkable achievement. In 2018, a new chapter began with Senior Winemaker Tim Heath building on this legacy and leading Katnook's journey into the future.
Katnook Estate Merlot 2017
I am not quite sure what it is about Merlot, but most Australian examples are thoroughly unimpressive. Perhaps it is the barrage of heat that even the cooler regions experience across such short durations. After all, this is an earlier ripening variety and requires a gentle buildup of warmth. This is not the worst, but at best, serves as a dry, mid-weighted red with accents of tomato bush, damson plum and herb.
