Jean-Paul Thévenet is certainly a name in everyone's ear ever since Kermit Lynch dubbed him, together with Marcel Lapierre, Guy Breton and Jean Foillard, as Beaujolais famous "Gang of Four" in the '80s. The essence of their philosophy: take a step back, appreciate and cultivate old vines, apply organic farming practices, avoid the use of sulphur, let natural ferments do their magic and help the terroir expressing itself through minimal intervention. Following these principals, each of them has ever since proven that Beaujolais is more than just 'Nouveau' and can indeed produce meaningful, complex and wonderful wines. Read More

Press Review

2018 Jean-Paul Thévenet Morgon Vieilles Vignes

70 year old vines here, biodynamically farmed. I slashed my right index finger open on the foil, so it’s now kind of hard to type. Who said wine tasting is not a dangerous career? Importer: Fesq
A plume of exotic spice, peat sweetness, dark cherry and dried roses. It’s dense, spicy, deep curry-like flavour, laced with aniseed and potpourri, melting tannin, stony texture and a slightly wild-arsed edge, but still pure, and so charismatic. Long and succulent. Beautiful unfettered expression of Gamay. So highly recommended.

2018 Jean-Paul Thévenet Morgon Vieilles Vignes
Deep, vivid ruby. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe cherry and blackberry, along with building floral and exotic spice notes. Stains the palate with alluringly sweet black/blue fruit preserve, candied violet and spicecake flavors that deepen slowly on the back half while maintaining urgency. Displays a compelling blend of richness and finesse finishing strikingly long and precise, with repeating florality and harmonious tannins that come on late.

2018 Jean-Paul Thévenet Morgon Vieilles Vignes

The 2018 Morgon Vieilles Vignes bursts from the glass with a high-toned bouquet of red cherries, rose petals and orange rind. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and elegant, with lively acids, melting tannins and a succulent core of fruit. This is a charming rendition of a cuvée that's routinely among the appellation's most elegant, and it's already drinking well. Thévenet told me that there will be two bottlings, the wine reviewed here being the first of them.
