Gestalt Woodside Pinot Noir 12pk 2018
Making wines they love to drink, Craig Turnbull and Anthony Pearce, have taken the knowledge they learnt working for others and throw it out the window with their joint venture Gestalt. Sourcing fruit from organic growers in the Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, and Clare Valley, Anthony and Craig are producing contemporary wines with minimal intervention, and lots of care. Utilising unfashionable varietal such as Savagnin, and Petit Manseng, alongside more classical varietals of the regions such as Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir, Grenache, Shiraz, and Mouverdre, they have crafted a fantastic range of blends and single vineyard wines, very much in the style of the new generation of Basket Range producers..
An emerging sect of Adelaide Hills pinot noir seems to be taking cues from the ‘nouveau’ modality of wines, rather than trying to push pinot into something more serious. Room for both, but geez the success rate for fresh, nubile young pinot drinks is ratcheting up.
Bright and crunchy, slightly sour-bitter in a pleasing way, juicy but tightened with some fine tannins and a flinty run of mineral-like feel. Sour cherry and green herb in perfume too. It’s not elegant per se, but it is fresh and frisky and fun-feeling. Good drink, knock a chill in.
