Eldridge Estate is one of those unique, truly special places where a site and the guiding personalities are in perfect harmony. David Lloyd and his (late) wife, Wendy, purchased the property in 1995, and set about making wines of near incomparable commitment to their terroir in Red Hill, Mornington. Only 3ha under vine in a special sloping, enclosed valley – these are cool, elegant and unadorned wines. Eldridge Estate specialise in the local kings, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but with a superb Gamay added – one of Australia’s finest.

    Eldridge Estate Wendy Chardonnay 2019
A tribute to David Lloyd’s wife, Wendy (1954-2014), being the best selection of Chardonnay from the estate. I always have a slightly uneasy feeling assigning scores to wines that have a strong emotional connection to the winemaker; it seems kind of churlish to me. Anyway, wine is top shelf to my tastes, so here we go.

Nashi pear, spicy ginger oak, ripe lemon, fennel seed. It’s flavoursome but restrained, firm chalky texture, saline, with some wheatgerm and savoury flavours, cool and tight, with a long and fine spicy finish. Lovely wine. Needs a few years to really roll out.

Mid straw gold in the glass, with wafts of lemon drops and lemon shortcake. There are layers upon layers of flavour but it never gets too big. Sure there’s a weight and depth across the palate, but the acidity keeps everything in check, leaving the finish buoyant.
