Eldridge Estate is one of those unique, truly special places where a site and the guiding personalities are in perfect harmony. David Lloyd and his (late) wife, Wendy, purchased the property in 1995, and set about making wines of near incomparable commitment to their terroir in Red Hill, Mornington. Only 3ha under vine in a special sloping, enclosed valley – these are cool, elegant and unadorned wines. Eldridge Estate specialise in the local kings, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but with a superb Gamay added – one of Australia’s finest.

    Eldridge Estate Gamay 2019
100% destemmed berries wild-fermented and matured in large-format oak. Spectacular colour, spectacular wine. Layer upon layer of plum, pepper and spice, tannins made to order. 13.5% alc, screwcap, drink to 2039

    Eldridge Estate Gamay 2019
A wine that offers much contrast, with a depth of flavour that doesn’t go overboard. It starts with heady aromas, all floral with a strong lavender note. The medium-bodied palate opens up to dark fruits, baking spices and gritty tannins then lengthens out. Best in its youth but it will last some distance.

    Eldridge Estate Gamay 2019
There’s an understated firmness to this excellent Mornington peninsula gamay. A tension, let’s call it. It tastes of red cherries and strawberries with a slightly balsamic edge, and while it’s juicy and flowing there’s also a sinewy aspect to the tannin, as if pulled by strings. I have a feeling that it’s still finding its feet; in any case all the signs here are good.
