Elderton was founded by Neil and Lorraine Ashmead in 1982, and is now run by their sons, Allister and Cameron. Built around the famous Command vineyard in the centre of Nuriootpa, Elderton also has its own vineyards in Greenock and the Eden Valley. Julie Ashmead leads the winemaking and viticulture teams in crafting distinctly classic, yet refined, Barossa reds that live up to the estate’s history and world class quality.

Press Review

    Elderton Western Ridge Grenache 2017

A rarity on these shores, this logical blend is an archetypal Mediterranean one, from the Languedoc to Spain. Why? Grenache’s bumptious hedonism is ably tamed by carignan’s bristling acidity and sinew. This is no exception. Barossan fruitcake spice and raspberry liqueur DNA is all there, but with a wiry bristle of
carnal allure and a welcome rasp.

    Elderton Western Ridge Grenache 2017

Made from grenache vines that have been growing at Greenock in the Barossa Valley since 1915. There’s a tiny patch of (old vine) carignan in the vineyard too, hence the blend.

Truth be told it’s a beautiful wine. Ever so fragrant, ever so tasty, but in a light (-ish) and frisky way. Spice, raspberries, redcurrant, orange peel and flash of anise. Ultra fine grained tannin. Some alcohol warmth. Tension in a good way. Good now but will likely score higher in time.

There are just 100 cases of the 2017 Western Ridge Grenache-Carignan, a full-bodied, creamy-textured red that's loaded with dusty cherries, roses and tea-like notes. It's plush and a bit warm on the palate, with a silky finish.

Medium to full red colour with a purple tint. The bouquet is fresh and herbal, slightly green and almost grassy-herbal, the palate is quite thick on the finish thanks to chewy tannins and alcohol, the aftertaste lingering well.
