Winery Details

Elderton was founded by Neil and Lorraine Ashmead in 1982, and is now run by their sons, Allister and Cameron. Built around the famous Command vineyard in the centre of Nuriootpa, Elderton also has its own vineyards in Greenock and the Eden Valley. Julie Ashmead leads the winemaking and viticulture teams in crafting distinctly classic, yet refined, Barossa reds that live up to the estate’s history and world class quality.

Press Review

    Elderton Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

75% from Nuriootpa, 25% Eden Valley. 22 months in second and third fill French
hogsheads and puncheons. As ever, a well constructed wine allowing the inherently generous nature of Barossa cabernet to strut its stuff. Varietal aromas and flavours are at the sweet-fruited end of the spectrum, and the oak contribution isn’t shy, but the overall drinkability factor is high.

    Elderton Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

A blend of fruit from Nuriootpa (75%) and Eden Valley (25%), the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon features lovely varietal aromas of mint, tobacco and cassis. Full-bodied but firm and slightly austere, it does turn silky on the finish. Fine with steak now, it should age well for over a decade.

    Elderton Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

Deep red colour with a trace of purple. The aromas are dusty, earthy, chocolate and cocoa-powder-like, the palate dense and thickly-layered, with richness and fleshy extract aplenty. Oak has been liberally applied. Full-bodied, deep and rich, the tannins ample and a little chewy. A big Barossa red.

    Elderton Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

The vines range between 19 and 72 years of age. It sees all-French oak, most or all of it used. There’s a fair amount (25%) of Eden Valley in the mix too.

It’s a supple red. It has pretty good weight but it’s all about the glide of soft-skinned flavour. It tastes of redcurrant as much as black, has some loamy background characters, and slips vanilla and violet into the mix. Not complex but pretty reliable.
