Richard Langford | Barons of the Barossa 2018 Barossa Winemaker of the Year

Elderton Command Shiraz | Langton's 'Excellent' Classification (VII 2018)

Elderton was founded by Neil and Lorraine Ashmead in 1982, and is now run by their sons, Allister and Cameron. Built around the famous Command vineyard in the centre of Nuriootpa, Elderton also has its own vineyards in Greenock and the Eden Valley. Winemaker Richard Langford crafts distinctly classic, yet refined, Barossa reds.

Press Review

    Elderton Command Shiraz 2015

Oddly, I once poured this wine by the glass at an emploie in Paris. While nostalgic, it still embodies the sort of inimitable, old vine (average 121 years) power that warm climate Australia does so well. The violet, pepper grind and meld of plummy fruit and Chinese five spice remain this brooding, highly ageable wine's calling card. Vanilla pod oak serves as a welcome restraining device to the exuberance. Exaggerated? You be the judge.

    Elderton Command Shiraz 2015

Deepish and bright red colour with a purple rim. The bouquet is spicy and earthy, with both dark and red fruit aromas, good intensity of full-bodied flavour with soft ample tannins. Rich as plush, tasting of fruitcake, plum pudding and a lovely core of sweet fruit.
