Dune Empty Quarter 12Pk 2016 - Vigorous Bros
The next Generation of the Lloyd family (Coriole) planting their flag in the Vale. A new project from brothers Duncan and Peter Lloyd, Dune wines sees them step out from the shadow of Coriole wines. Sourcing fruit from a single vineyard in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of Mclaren Vale. Organic in conversion, this sandy vineyard has been completely re-imagined since being purchased by the brothers in 2009. Planting and grafting over southern Mediterranean varietals has seen them create a unique range of blends alongside some classic and so2 free shiraz.
A GMCS (grenache, mourvedre, carignan, shiraz) from Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. From Peter and Sexy Boy Duncan Lloyd, the next generation of Lloyd following Mark of Coriole. May their legacy go well; some ripper wines to start from this earnest new project. Kudos, dudes.
High quaffability but with more interest and depth than that suggests. It’s a bright, just medium weight red, quite spicy, but not overly so, and shows a crisp-dry finish that kind of feels part nouveau for all its freshness. That being said, there’s a ripple of tannin in the choc-berry world of this wine, and the smudge of dustiness that lingers gives a savoury edge. All day, every day drinking, with pizazz. Appealing stuff.
