Jean-Paul Daumen took over from his father in 1992 and has since become one of the most iconic, innovative and respected producers of the Rhone. In addition to his Vieille Julienne label, Jean-Paul is also making wines under his biodynamic negoc label ‘Daumen’. Even if these wines have the intention to be more accessible, they are anything but simple. Read More

Press Review

Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape les Hauts-Lieux 2018
Brilliant violet. Cherry, blackberry, pungent flowers, allspice and garrigue on the assertively perfumed nose. Sappy and broad on entry, offering appealingly sweet red and dark berry flavors that tighten up and become spicier through the midpalate. There's excellent depth here, but there's energy as well. Closes impressively long and gently chewy, with resonating cherry and floral notes and slowly building tannins that add discreet grip.

Like Les Trois Sources, this is also powerfully vibrant in fruit if a slightly darker fruit expression. It's a little rounder, with denser but very fine tannins and lovely vibrancy of acidity, this really builds on the palate, stretching long and deep. From three high altitude parcels close to the limestone plateau, some clay, relatively high altitude and late ripening. Biodynamic.

Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Châteauneuf-du-Pape les Hauts-Lieux 2018
65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Cinsault, 5% Counoise. Average age of vines is 70 years. Importer: Fesq
GW: Orange peel, blackberry, nudging raisin in ripeness, chocolaty and very ripe, fine chalk dust tannin of persistence, Old Jamaica chocolate, ferrous open-weave tannin, bold and slightly warm finish. 93+ points
MB: Lifted floral perfume, rose petals, blackcurrant pastille, aniseed, cinnamon, dried orange peel and clove with some turned earth and undergrowth characters. Rich in flavour, soft, broad and fleshy, dense wall of ripe berries, plummy fruit, web of building tannin and a touch oafish in its gait across the palate. Big, bold, deep, rum n raisin here, ripeness a thing, tannin bold and outside the flesh – that being said, still something impressive to drink. 92 points

Tank sample. Denser and more baked than their Trois Sources, with this texture and an inky, leathery note on the finish. Ultra-fine tannic feel, very polished and plush, with crisp edges. Long savoury finish, and the tannin sticks around for a long while. Great concentration on the finish.
