2018 Gourmet Traveller Wine Viticulturalist of the Year

The Bream Creek vineyard was planted in 1990 by Fred Peacock. It has long been considered one of the very best sites and vineyards in Eastern Tasmania. Fred’s wines are concentrated and long, thanks to the mature vines and low yields.

Bream Creek Reserve Pinot Noir 2018

Cherry flesh, savoury walnut, earthy pomegranate with fresh fermenting grape must, choc/ orange sweetness. Warm, enveloping aromas like sweet kisses of Belgian Choc Ice Cream with oak influence. Muscular and dialled up, almost heaving and pent up. There’s a full amount of flattening, drying, clucking tannin that provides a very solid base to fuller bodied spiced cherry and blackberry fruit and spiced oak. A tight powerhouse with decades ahead.

Bream Creek Reserve Pinot Noir 2018

Deepish, bright, bold purple/red colour. The bouquet very primary and straightforward with simple cherry fruit, but unadorned by winemakerly complexities. A suggestion of cherry-flavoured cough syrup. The wine has weight and oomph, soft tannins in fine balance, but just needs more time to build complexity. It has excellent depth of fruit and the potential to be so much more with another year or two in the cellar.

Bream Creek Reserve Pinot Noir 2018

Southeast Tasmania; hand harvested; 28% whole bunches; partial wild fermentation; matured 9 months in 26% new French oak barrels. Light red/purple hue. Elegant, spicy red berry fruits are impacted more by the roast nut and dark chocolate influence of French oak than would be expected for just 26% new barrels. All it asks for is time, and it holds the fruit integrity, persistence, fine tannin structure and bright acid line to go the distance.

The bright dark cherry aromas benefit from a touch of classy oak. The palate is silky, fine and long.
