Best's Great Western Sparkling Shiraz 2014

Producer Hall of Honour - Tyson Stelzer's Australian Sparkling Report 2018

Runner Up Sparkling Reds of the Year

All the glorious layers of regional personality of Great Western and the historic depth of Best’s are packed into this characterful sparkling shiraz. Satsuma plum fruit is dusted with paprika and black pepper, backed with high cocoa dark chocolate, set off with a fine, creamy bead, and supported by firm, finely textured tannins, culminating in a long finish in which glossy fruit is countered by drying alcohol. Value.

Best's Great Western Sparkling Shiraz 2014

This has a deep, purple-tinted colour with savoury dried-herb and earthy notes over dark plum, chocolate and spices. It’s medium-full bodied with good rich fruit, some sweetness and soft but drying tannins to follow.

Best's Great Western Sparkling Shiraz 2014

Early picked shiraz grapes with minimal oak treatment, the dosage by aged Liqueur Muscat ex old casks. Fresh blueberry, blackberry and boysenberry and a hint of choc-mint as well. Quite plush, the flavours a combination of savoury, spice and generous but restrained fruit, the fine bead a feature. Excellent example of the style.

Best's Great Western Sparkling Shiraz 2014

I look forward to each new release of Best’s Sparkling Shiraz. I’m still an absolute sucker for a good sparkling red, after all these years. (I need to update the bottle image; the label is now white).

It’s fresh, clean, mellow through the palate but then rich and sweet to close. It tastes of black cherry and boysenberry, mint and plum, though the finish then pours on toffee, chocolate and raisin notes. It shows some warmth, but the flavour pushes long. The dosage is probably a touch too high for my tastes but then I’d also reckon that it’s been finely tuned and balanced, and that’s hard to argue against. Pretty impressive all round. Some nice ‘florals’ here too.
